Grave Gravy

A toad hops from hole to hole
searching for a wet patch to sit and croak
and lie in wait for insects that come to play
by the near stagnant watering hole

but those insects, they drink water too
and by the time they’re done
they are in numbers swallowed whole
by the toad that hops from hole to hole.

It’s never fair, what it does
to mole crickets, hoppers, dragonflies and co
yet, it gets wet more often than not
should it not it’s reward enjoy?
